Phospholipids and Hyaluronan: From Molecular Interactions to Nano- and Macroscale Friction

Phospholipids and hyaluronan are two key biomolecules that contribute to the excellent lubrication of articular joints. alone in combination with have also displayed low friction forces on smooth surfaces micro- nanosized tribological contacts. In an effort develop aqueous-based systems, it is highly relevant explore if these types molecules able provide efficient macroscopic contacts involving roughness larger than thickness lubricating layer. To this end, we investigated performance hyaluronan, phospholipid 1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DPPC), mixtures components using glass a mini-traction machine. We compared our data those obtained flat silica previous atomic force microscopy studies, highlighted insights hyaluronan–phospholipid interactions gained from recent simulations. Our demonstrate does not any benefit, but DPPC reduces by order magnitude.
